Message from the President of JSCC on the Award of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Professor Susumu Kitagawa
Professor Susumu Kitagawa, former president and honorary member of the Japan Society of Coordination Chemistry, has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. As the first Nobel laureate from the society, I extend my heartfelt congratulations on the further elevated and widespread recognition of the research field of chemistry of “Coordination Space”, which was pioneered by Professor Kitagawa and is based on porous coordination polymers (PCPs/MOFs).
Professor Kitagawa advocated for the importance of DIEP (Discovery, Internationality, Encouragement, and Publicity) during his presidency of this society, and its influence has permeated the society. These endeavors have led to groundbreaking discoveries, nearly 70% of presentations at the Conference of Japan Society of Coordination Chemistry being in English, the Society actively hosting international symposia, remarkable advancements for outstanding young researchers, a significant increase in membership for the Young Coordination Chemists’ Association of Japan (a reserve force for future leaders), and the launch of Coordination Chemistry Research (COCR) as its official research journal. I hope that Professor Kitagawa’s Nobel Prize will further invigorate coordination chemistry, as well as chemistry in Japan and around the world.
President of JSCC
